Test 1

This video documents the first in a series of tests examining how the public react to the destruction of the traditional white cube space. It should be noted that the artworks in this series are focused around the experience of the viewer; all other elements are required either to facilitate this experience or document it.

The mechanism is displayed and as a result the viewer is presented with an informed choice, this notion of an informed choice is central to the work. However, at no point was the operator told how many strikes it would require to break the glass tube, or what the tinted liquid contained within the tube actually was. However, most people were willing to risk spilling said liquid on not only the work, but also their hand.

This simple mechanism demonstrated the public’s willingness to engage with destructive works of art, a line of enquiry which I intend to investigate further.
